Mobile telephony giants Vodafone and Nokia are preparing to set up a 4G phone network on the moon in 2019, and this network allows two mobile devices on the planet's surface of our planet to stream videos and turn it into a station based on Earth.
"We've sent two ships to the lunar surface and are collecting lots of scientific data, HD video and photos. The problem is that we can not send this material directly from ships to Earth, as it requires a lot of energy. So, using the 4G network on the moon, we can bring it to our planet, as there is plenty of energy available to do so. Currently we can 'stream' some real-time HD video from the Moon, "says Kate Arkless Gray, PTS scientist.
But can the Moon provide coverage with 4G before such a thing happens to certain parts of the UK?
"Look, I'm biased, because I'm working for a space company, but we have a lot of things that we're using every day on Earth, which were first developed for use in space. For example, the camera on your mobile phone uses a sensor that was originally produced and designed for a space mission. So you will never know how wonderful things we can learn by fulfilling these incredible missions, such as ours on the moon, "she said.
